Rec Room is a game beloved by many and known as one of the most unique VR gaming experiences in modern VR history. However, it was Rec Room’s downfall that caught the eyes of the masses within the Rec Room Community.
Rec Room, founded by Nick Fajt and Cameron Brown, is now shutting down due to declining revenue and lack of gross income. “Starting now, no new accounts or friend requests can be made. Creators will no longer be able to share monetized content, and the platform will go dark at 12 p.m. PT on June 1,” stated in an article on TechCrunch.
Rec Room is a multiplayer VR experience where players can play games, make friends, and make inventions. “We spent a long time trying to find a way to make the numbers work,” was written in an announcement on Monday, March 30, 2026, by the company. Many were affected by this: players, staff, and creators alike.

This is indeed saddening to hear, but it felt sudden and suspicious, especially in this day and age, where the VR gaming market thrives. With the fact that this game brings in $100 million annually, why are they not turning a profit? Not to mention, this game is cross-platform for VR, PC, console, iOS, and Android.
As days pass and the eventual shutdown draws closer, the community is in a state of grief. When user @hegeg was asked for their opinion on what Rec Room could have done to avoid going into debt, they stated that Rec Room could have added a new RRO (Rec Room Original) experience, where it takes place in modern day. They could have even created many events that bring the community closer.
Even though the outrage within the community is potent and growing, one thing is known for certain. Rec Room will be loved and will be remembered. Thank you, Rec Room, for giving it your Rec Room best.

On May 5, 2026, Kory Kirk wrote an article titled “Rec Rooms Suspicious Shutdown”. I really enjoyed reading the article because it was interesting to read. Also really enjoyed how you mentioned the background of the game Rec Room and how it became what it is today. Also mentioning the background of the game and its origin was a good idea. This was helpful to better understand what Rec Room was.
Also I was really intrigued with how the article was written because it was written really well and is really attention grabbing to the audience. The title of the article is what made it attention grabbing because it gives it a mysterious vibe of the game. And also really enjoyed reading about how the game makes 100 million annually and how it was suspicious that they were shutting down servers.
To add on, I also really enjoyed how you added opinions of others about the Rec Room shutdown. It made the article overall really enjoyable to read and hearing the opinions of others as well. However I wish there could’ve been another or two more opinions in your article which could’ve made it more interesting. Lastly, the article was overall really good to read.
