Part of what makes Millikan so special is our diversity and the priority to celebrate the different cultures represented on our campus. With our predominantly Hispanic population, it is important for our Hispanic representing clubs like Millikan Folklorico Club and La Raza Club to make everyday during the national observance, Sept. 15 through Oct. 15, special.
“[Hispanics] have made so many contributions to the United States and this month celebrates everything we’ve done and achieved,” says Millikan Folklorico and La Raza co-president Carolina Pina. “Us being here is an honor because all our parents and family members came from different backgrounds and we’re celebrating that as a whole community. ”
One of the ways they are doing this is through daily announcements highlighting important Hispanic figures from both the past and present.
“A lot of people can name a few Hispanic icons, celebrities and stars, but not many recognize the adversity they overcame to be successful. Through the announcements, we are able to hopefully inspire Latino students to overcome barriers and take the opportunity to make a real difference in their community,” says La Raza co-president Sophie Salazar.

“Although Hispanic heritage month ends on the 15th of October, the activities La Raza hopes to continue doing will remind people that being Hispanic should be celebrated year round.”
Our clubs were also given the opportunity to represent Millikan at Long Beach Unified School District’s second annual Latino Heritage Celebration.
Time to engage with the celebration of Hispanic Heritage month to shine a light on your or your peer’s roots with the Millikan community.

Dear Corydon Editor,
On October 7, 2025, Kayla Castillo wrote an outstanding article. Her article does a wonderful job highlighting the importance of celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month at Millikan and showcasing how clubs like Millikan Folklorico and La Raza bring the community together. I really enjoy how she included personal quotes from club leaders, as it makes the story more personal and powerful. The use of photos is also great because it captures the energy in pride of these celebrations.
One way to make this article even stronger would be to improve the flow of some sentences so the ideas connect more smoothly. For example, when introducing clubs, you could explain their role in the celebration before moving into quotes. Also, a short concluding sentence that restates the lasting impact of these celebrations beyond October would give the piece a strong finish. Overall, the article is engaging and very meaningful that effectively celebrates culture, pride and community.
Sincerely,
Isabella Rodriguez

I really enjoyed reading this article because not only did it highlight the importance of celebrating cultures throughout our community, but also, gave a spotlight on Hispanic culture during Hispanic Heritage month. Especially adding quotes from these clubs that bring together many Hispanics throughout the school. Kayla really captured the ideas that the Millikan Folklorico Club and La Raza Club send out to the community. Even the message at the end of the article asking, “to shine a light on your or your peer’s roots with the Millikan community” emphasizes the clubs’ message. One thing I feel that should be added is more commentary or words from the author. Kayla did an excellent job at not only introducing the clubs and what they do for Hispanic Heritage month, but Kayla also talked about what people can do throughout their day-to-day lives. Seeing Kayla’s take on what could also be done for Hispanic Heritage month could benefit the article. Even mentioning loteria that was held in the quad area of Millikan is a way of celebrating Hispanic Heritage month. Altogether, this was a great article showcasing what Hispanic Heritage really means and how we as a community celebrate and remember our ancestors and the stuff they accomplished. As well as calling attention to Hispanic figures throughout history who made a difference in the world we live in today.

In this article, Kayla talks about our school, and how it is predominantly of Hispanic population, while also being very diverse. She does a good job at citing the different clubs that represent the Hispanic community, like Folklorico club and La Raza club. I was first intrigued to read this article because of my background, and how I am both Mexican and American. After reading the article, I loved how the article flowed with ease, and uses quotes from others, like the co-president of the Folklorico club.
Another aspect of the article that stuck out to me was how she provided the information that although Hispanic Heritage Month ends on the 15th of October, the different clubs involved in Hispanic heritage and pride will still continue to put forth efforts so that they will be celebrated all year.
In closing, Kayla makes sure to end with a positive note, which does well to wrap up the article. Overall, the article does a really good job at informing everyone on Hispanic Heritage Month, and makes sure to provide the audience with plenty of information and facts about how some of the different clubs at this school are attempting to make sure that Hispanic Heritage is celebrated year-round.

This article does a good job illustrating the importance of Hispanic culture as something that should be celebrated year around instead of just for a month. Hispanic heritage month resonates strongly with me personally because of my own Hispanic background. As a Hispanic, I appreciate how the Corydon is helping to bring awareness to this celebration. Castillo also took the time to quote the La Raza club’s co-presidents, Carolina Pina and Sophie Salazar who talk about the many contributions that Hispanics have made to the US and the adversity that many Hispanic icons have had to overcome. This brings to light the hardships that many Hispanic people have endured and just goes to show that all races and backgrounds deserve to be celebrated.
I also liked the inclusion of La Raza Club and Folklorico Club in this article, since those clubs play a large role during this month. As a member of La Raza, I believe that this club does a great job at helping the community learn more about Hispanic culture and brings many Hispanic people at Millikan together. I think it would be very beneficial to highlight these clubs in a more in depth view and talk about the different activities that we do in the club, and the Hispanic figures we learn about. Overall, this article was fun to read and a great way to represent the meaning behind Hispanic heritage month.

This article does very well in presenting the purpose and core values of Millikan Folklorico Club and La Raza Club as they celebrate Hispanic Heritage month. By interviewing some important members of both clubs the writer offers multiple perspectives on the importance and purpose of celebrating the Hispanic population, to honor different backgrounds and recognize Hispanic achievements. She also highlights how Millikan is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month through daily announcements, demonstrating the significance of Hispanic culture and influence in our school community.
As a Hispanic student, I suggest that the Millikan Corydon and the school itself continue to promote more activities and events that reflect and showcase Hispanic culture and influence by including more information about their importance as well as following events. This would hopefully encourage more students to attend and participate in these events while learning and developing interest in different cultures.
Currently, one of my main concerns is the unity of students through physical interaction. Not many students choose to participate in certain activities or events because of their social anxiety, their lack of interest, or their attachment to digital devices. Hopefully the Millikan Corydon can help to inspire and encourage students to become more involved in the school community and develop a sense of unity by sharing more about the importance of activities and events such as celebrating Hispanic Heritage month.

This article really changed my view on Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month. A point that stood out to me was the topic of diversity here at Millikan High School. Nowadays we don’t really realize how diverse and different we are until we look at it from an outsider’s perspective. Students don’t see each other differently at school yet we all come from different cultures and backgrounds. Clubs like the Millikan Folklorico Club and La Raza Club really highlight the Hispanic community which I love.
As stated in the article Hispanics have changed the U.S in so many different ways. They have contributed tremendously to the economy through labor and entrepreneurship. Not to mention adding diversity to the culture through food, music, and arts, through not only social engagement but also politically. This is truly not highlighted enough, but celebrating Sept .15- Oct.15 focuses on the positives from having diversity. The support from these clubs that have been formed at Millikan High School and the articles written has helped me interpret a new view and understanding on Hispanic culture and celebration of it.
Concluding my comment I wanted to talk about the importance of these daily announcements. I think it’s so important to teach students about more important figures that have helped us be who we are even if we come from different backgrounds. Students will need to know this information and reflect on it as they get older so I love that they are incorporating and promoting this piece during announcements. Overall I loved reading about this story and how the club is really focusing on Hispanic Heritage Month.

As a member of the Latino community, it’s always amazing to see my culture be appreciated and loved by many others around school. This article did an excellent job of clearly and effectively stating the importance of celebrating the diversity and inclusion of different cultures here at Millikan. Giving examples such as La Raza Club and Millikan Folklorico Club were great examples of how Millikan students represent their predominantly Hispanic population.
I would love to hear more about the background of the clubs and how they’ve grown throughout the years. I know that many of these clubs were established relatively recently, and it would be interesting to see how the students and the school have been able to bring communities together through the growth of these clubs. If any of the creators of these clubs are still here at this school, it might be worth asking them what inspired them to create the club or what their future goals are for it.
Overall, this article is an admirable source of information about our school’s Hispanic community, and I would love to hear more about the different cultures and communities that bring our school together.
