Hey Sharks! Today, I’ll be showing you some of Millikan’s very own environmental projects from Mr.Reynold’s 5th-period class!
On April 25th, Mr. Reynold’s tenth-grade Principles of Law class dove into a Shark Tank activity where students gave an in-depth pitch on an idea they had to PEACE seniors, who acted as the “Sharks.”
Reynolds says, “PEACE students in tenth grade have been doing a grade-level project focused on environmental justice. So in all of their classes, like chemistry and language arts, they have been learning about different aspects of environmental justice issues that affect their communities.”
One of the two winning fifth-period projects included “reJEANeration”, a project focused on jeans. The group says they were inspired by the Target policy, where you “give away jeans for a 20% discount.” This is referring to trading in your jeans to the Target Corporation.
reJEANeration says they wanted to focus on the environmental impact of washing jeans several times and the effects it has on pollution levels. The reJEANeration project resulted in students giving away their old jeans and distributing them to be repurposed and reused.

“Save Us From Pollution”, the second winning project, focuses on the root of ocean plastic pollution. Their action was to clean out the Long Beach canals before the trash could reach the ocean. Neveah Nunez says, “We wanted to go to the root cause and clean the streets and canals, because we know the canals lead to the ocean, and that’s the root cause of why there is pollution in the ocean.”
This activity highlights the main purpose of the PEACE program and its strong focus on activism. Look out for the next PEACE event to better help our environment and community.
