On September 17th, Jimmy Kimmel was filming his episode where he spoke about the passing of Charlie Kirk and Trump’s Press statement about Kirk’s passing. Kimmel made a remark saying “ In between the finger pointing, there was grieving. On Friday the white house flew the flags at half staff which got some criticism, but on a human level you can see how hard the president is taking this.” Then a clip played of president trump at a press interview. This led to him being suspended and his show put on hold indefinitely.
The statement that was made from The Walt Disney Company ABC channel says says, “Last Wednesday, [September 17th] we made the decision to suspend production on the show to avoid further inflaming a tense situation at an emotional moment for our country. It is a decision we made because we felt some of the comments were ill-timed and thus insensitive.” Then on September 23rd, they announced his return to television later that week.
Mrs. Alexander, a sophomore SEGA history teacher at Millikan says, “I was just so shocked by how far the connections of the government have reached into entertainment.”
This sparked outrage across the country, with many people posting their reactions on social media. People were even cancelling their Disney+ and Hulu subscriptions due to disagreeing with the network choice to cancel the show. According to The Economic Times, “Between September 17 and 23, Disney’s stock dropped by 2.39%, equivalent to nearly USD 4.99 billion in market value.”

PEACE junior Vivianna Gallardo says, “I feel like it was a good form of protest for people to boycott Disney+ and Hulu. [Kimmel] being brought back just shows how impactful people can be.” Aljazeera news says, “Experts say Disney’s decision to bring Kimmel’s show back on air was probably motivated by business interests, since many consumers were ending their subscriptions to Disney’s streaming services.”
