Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. (RFK Jr.) made headlines with a controversial statement. Kennedy Jr. claimed that “autism destroys families” and “destroys our greatest resource, which is our children.”
Such comments preserve negative stereotypes associated with autism, overshadowing the capabilities that a person with autism possesses. He also fails to recognize the strength and unique contributions of those on the spectrum.
Lucy Green, QUEST Senior and Co-president of the Rams Without Limits Club, added, “People like RFK Jr. spread and enhance toxic attitudes and lies surrounding people with disabilities and can hinder efforts towards mainstream inclusion.”

Despite his duty as HHS Secretary, concerning human conditions, RFK Jr. should be more qualified in his position to spread accurate information about people with disabilities, rather than continuing conversations with careless words.
Ms. Shapiro, one of Millikan’s Special Education teachers, states, “[RFK Jr. ‘s statements] hurts people, it causes pain and it spreads misinformation and ignorance.”
Contrastingly, the popular television show Love on the Spectrum provides a refreshing and uplifting portrayal of people with autism searching for love and meaningful relationships. The show serves as a reminder about autism as well as squashes stereotypes and stigmas surrounding people with disabilities.
The Millikan community celebrates the diverse talents that individuals on the spectrum possess. The Rams Without Limits Club fosters an environment where everyone can collaborate, proving that autism is not a barrier to living life.

Lily Fujita, PEACE Junior and also Co-president, explains, “False beliefs like the idea that autistic people cannot work, love, or live fulfilling lives creates stigma and isolation.”
While discussions about autism should include the challenges faced by families, it is equally important to celebrate the strengths and achievements of those on the spectrum.
