In the words of Chappell Roan herself, “I’m your favorite artist’s favorite artist.” The 26 year old artist stated this referencing the season 15 winner of” RuPaul’s Drag Race” , Sasha Colby, who Chappell Roan credits as one of her inspirations, at Coachella 2024. It’s as if she knew after this performance she really would be the favorite of many other artists in her industry and much of the world.
If you don’t know who Chappell Roan is, here is a little rundown. She is a 26 year old singer/songwriter who knows how to put on a good show. Her outfits are extremely unique and bold, taking inspiration from drag. She is an open member of the LGBTQ+ community and uses her platform to advocate and give a louder voice to her community. While her rise to fame is fairly new with the release of her hit single “Good Luck, Babe!” in April 2024, her popularity is already at an all time high.
“What I really love about Chappell is, besides her obvious talent, she’s very distinctive and so much different than other singers,” said Zoe Valentini, a COMPASS junior. “She’s also incredibly talented, creative and her music is relatable and amazing.”
Chappell Roan is the epitome of taking 10 years to go viral. She first started to share her love of singing on YouTube, singing covers and posting them for all to see. In 2015 she signed with the record label Atlantic Records, but she was unfortunately let go in late 2020.
In early 2022 Chappell got a publishing deal with SONY and reconnected with producer Dan Nigro. Chappell met Nigro during her time at Atlantic Records. Nigro is most known for producing Olivia Rodrigo’s multi-Grammy winning album “SOUR” and her sophomore album “GUTS.” Together they worked on her first album titled “The Rise and Fall of the Midwest Princess”. The songs varied from hype pop like “Super Graphic Ultra Modern Girl” and “Red Wine Supernova” to ballad-esque songs like “Kaleidoscope” and “Casual.” With Nigro’s connection to Olivia Rodrigo, the two quickly became good friends. Chappell even opened for a leg of Rodrigo’s tour in 2022.
Chappell would embark on her first tour in early 2023 and release her debut album later that same year. While she had begun to gain some attention, Chappell Roan’s world domination wouldn’t start until a couple of years later when she released her single “Good Luck, Babe!” in April 2024. The song had everything from a catchy chorus to a deep message that people could scream at the top of their lungs. As the song was reaching new heights on streaming platforms, Chappell would make the performance of a lifetime at Coachella, solidifying her place in the music industry.
“Her music has quickly risen up the charts — four of her songs recently entered the Billboard Hot 100 [her breakout hit “Good Luck, Babe!” hits number. 19 on the chart dated June 29], while her debut album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess reached the top 10 of the Billboard 200 for the first time nine months after its release,” according to Billboard.
Chappell Roan is now a household name being categorized with current greats like Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, and Sabrina Carpenter, who even covered Chappell’s smash hit “Good Luck, Babe!” on BBC Radio. She has performed on big stages like the Video Music Awards and late night talk shows. She even had a full circle moment when she was also a guest performer on Olivia Rodrigo’s “GUTS” world tour in LA, which she had opened for earlier in the tour. There she performed her viral song, “HOT TO GO,” which became famous for its iconic dance that many are calling this generation’s YMCA. I, like so many others, am excited to see what the future holds for this Midwest Princess and can’t wait to continue to see her grow in the music industry.

As someone who has never even heard of the singer Chappell Roan, this article helped me understand and appreciate that not everyone’s rise to success is quick. For many years, Roan was a nobody, until she wasn’t. I learned that in 2015, Roan was already signed with the record label Atlantic Records and would be let go as of 2020. Castillo explains what Roan was able to do as well as the people she worked with and met during her time at Atlantic Records. Roan would then go on \to sign a publishing deal with SONY and reconnect with her friend, the producer Dan Nigro. This would eventually lead to her major success in the music industry. Castillo does a great job at explaining Roan’s background and how she would eventually come to be very successful and popular. I like how Castillo compares Roan to big name artists like Taylor Swift and Sabrina Carpenter as it puts into perspective how big she’s made it! Furthermore, the name Chappell Roan is foreign to many students, which helped Castillo peak the interest of students who wondered how they’ve never heard of such a popular artist! Throughout her Article, Castillo is able to clearly explain Roan’s origins and rise to fame. In summary, Castillo does an amazing job at giving us insight into the big time artist Chappell Roan.

Castillo did an amazing job writing this article about Chappell Roan Rise to Fame. Castillo does a great job conveying the road she took in order to get to this point in her life. Roans Music has impacted many of the new generation. It has impacted the new generation that it is being called the new generations YMCA. She is also inspiring the LGBTQ+ artist too, She includes that her outfits are extremely bold and unique and that it takes inspiration from drag. She includes that she was steadily rising in fame but with her Hit single “Good Luck, Babe!” she rose even faster in rankings. She includes another person’s opinion, “What I really love about Chappell is, besides her obvious talent, she’s very distinctive and so much different than other singers,” said Zoe Valentini, a COMPASS junior. “She’s also incredibly talented, creative and her music is relatable and amazing.” This shows how much she has grown.
She includes the 10 years to go viral. It shows that she started sharing her experiences through Youtube for all of us to see. She signed a record label in 2015 but was let go in late 2020. But in 2022 she got a publishing deal with SONY and connected with Dan Nigro. This shows how artists are treated but no matter what happens to her she keeps on pursuing her dreams and continues to try. The only question is how does she deal with the hate she gets and what are ways she tells people or photographers to go away. In the end Castillo did an amazing job covering Chappell Roans Rise to Fame

I thought that this article is a well-polished article that effectively presents Chapell Roan’s rise to popularity. Castillo does a wonderful job providing context on who Roan is as a person. Castillo then depicts her path as an artist from when she was uploading videos of her song covers on Youtube, to her signing with Atlantic records in 2015… eventually leading to a deal with SONY. From this deal, she immediately rose to fame with her number one hit “ Good Luck Babe!” which Castillo does an excellent job elaborating on.
I love that Castillo used a quote from Zoe Valenti which is representative of a student’s perspective as to why people enjoy and love Chapell Roan’s music. I loved reading through this article but I think this was also a good time to refer to how Chappell Roan isn’t afraid to speak on the treatment of celebrities these days. Recently, Roan has experienced many instances where she needed to stand up for herself against pestering photojournalists, disrespectful fans and carping photographers. She has clapped back at individuals who have harassed her, exclaiming that she will not let herself be treated like an object rather than a human being, which would be great to add on to the article to highlight how Roan is trying to spark a change for the treatment of celebrities. Overall, Castillo does a tremendous job breaking down Chapell Roan’s road to fame through her art and representation.

On October 22, 2024, Kayla Castillo composed an article entitled “The Rise of Chapell Roan.” This article greatly describes Chappell Roan and her brilliant rise in the music industry. Her path is honestly an inspiring piece to witness and a great demonstration of authenticity, imagination, and determination. She is a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community, allowing her music to not only enthrall her audiences with her bold performances and unique style but also uses her platform to campaign for portrayal and inclusivity. The performance she presented at Coachella was a characterizing moment that illustrates her talent, and it’s encouraging to see her gain the recognition she has been working diligently for. The irresistible energy of her song “Good Luck, Babe!” and the overwhelming accomplishment of “HOT TO GO” ruminates her competence to connect with her listeners on a sincere level. However, this article should only focus on Chappell Roan and less on her producer as it takes away the whole purpose of her achievements. All in all, Roan’s path, from YouTube covers to her partnership with renowned producer Dan Nigro, embodies the hard work and perseverance that generally goes unnoticed in the industry. Her story not only inspires me, but the rest of the world who finds courage and stability when listening to her aspiring music. She continuously pushes boundaries and sets great examples for young people. I am looking forward to watching her progress and making her own impact in the music industry.

On October 22, 2024, Kayla Castillo wrote an article titled, “The Rise of Chappell Roan”. It first captured my interest because Chappell Roan has been a rapid nationwide phenomenon, first getting major mainstream attention this past summer and is now a staple in many of my friends’ playlists. While I know of her name, I do not know much about her upbringing or rise to fame. Castillo does a fantastic job synthesizing this short biography of Roan’s career, and it is clear that she is interested in her topic and has done thorough research across multiple sources. She even went as far back to Roan’s start as a humble midwest teenager singing songs and covers on YouTube to get her voice out there.
While I do believe this article is on point– being about a current and popular subject, is thorough and provides interesting information, and is engaging,– throughout the text there were some instances where I felt that the article did not flow as well or became run-on, along with a few punctuation mistakes. However, none of these minor mistakes were detrimental or got in the way of my enjoyment of this piece. It is well-written and feels personal to Castillo’s own interests. I also praise Castillo’s choice of mentioning Chappell’s openness of her identity and belonging in he LGBTQ+ community. Diversity and representation is always welcome, and helping spread word of this LBGTQ+ icon and her road to success only helps perpetuate hope in other young people in the community who have a modern example that it is possible to be up there with the greats. One perspective I would like to see added to this article is the input of other Chappell Roan fans and their extension of this topic.
Overall, I found Castillo’s article to be compellingly written and a worthy tribute to the artist. I look forward to reading more of her works and seeing what she accomplishes in the future.

On October 22, 2024, Kayla Castillo wrote an article titled, “ The Rise Of Chappell Roan. This article gives a lot of information on Chappell Roan and her rise to fame while also giving some of her background. This article gives a lot of good information about her fame and how she came to be what she is now. They also speak about the fact that she is bold and beautiful because she takes inspiration from drag queens and other artists.Which again is shown when Castillo writes about Chappell Roan’s creative mind through her inspiration taking from her sexuality and incorporating that into her music and appearance.
Throughout this article they give only one quote from a student and only one student which makes it very difficult to see how other students may feel about Chappell Roan. If they were able to use more quotes we would see all sides, even the sides that are not a part of the Chappell Roan fan base. This would give an incentive to listen to her music and determine which side is correct. If you got the other side you also would have made a longer piece which could highlight the way Chappell Roan deals with the people who may not like her as much as her fans. This could also be shown to give more information on how she grew up and how people can relate to her when they were growing up.

I found the article very interesting because of how Kayla Castillo was able to critique and say positive words about Chappell Roans music. One thing that stood out to me was how she knew all of the albums and awards she won, which shows how much research and work Kayla had to put in to complete this assignment. Furthermore, her care and love for Chappel is very much shown, which portrays a more passionate piece, and seems more of a connection to her music and her work. Also, it proves how much fans will do to show they enjoy the music of their favorite artists and even love their slogans and logos. I also enjoyed how you were able to talk about the brat poster and the meaning behind it without talking about Chappell Roan.

Castillo’s main idea of the article pertains to how quickly Chappell Roan has become so popular. In April, my friends and I became fans of her music and found some of the meanings behind her songs relatable. Roan’s music has even impacted the younger individuals in our school, making it to the list of songs played at football games for students to dance to.
Castillo mentions Billboard wrote, “her debut album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess reached the top 10 of the Billboard 200 for the first time nine months after its release,” demonstrating just how quickly her music came to light. Since her rise was so sudden many of those students have yet to know who she even is, thus creating a curiosity Castillo’s article can feed. Castillo elaborates on Chappell Roan’s history providing the reader insight into just how she became an overnight sensation.
I enjoyed the fact Castillo included the perspective of a former student exhibiting a look into the mind of another young person’s opinion on Chappell Roan. The student projects a clear positive point of view on Roan’s talent and overall persona. All in all, the article is enjoyable to read, seeing how someone like everyone else can rise while also illustrating to the audience just how Chappell Roan created fun and relatable music for young individuals.

This article helped me understand as the reader that not everyone is so quick to fame. It took quite a few ups and downs throughout her career for Chappell to reach the success she has today. I learned that she was picked up by Atlantic records in 2015 but was unfortunately dropped five years later. As well as, through her time with Atlantic Records she met Dan Nigro, best known for producing Olivia Rodrigo’s albums “SOUR” and “GUTS”, who played a role in creating Roan’s first album. This only leads me to believe that connections are truly everything and has me questioning who is getting fired for letting go Chappell Roan. Kayla Castillo did well in organizing her article and I found it to be very informative. From introducing the artist, Chappell Roan, to giving us an insight on her musical style and personality. Although I am not a listener myself, I am well aware of her upcoming fame and have seen the viral dance to her song “HOT TO GO” on social media. Through this article, I now understand Roan’s popularity. She is a proud advocate for the LGBTQ+ community and is not afraid to call out rude reporters or a boring audience. Kayla’s article on “The Rise of Chappell Roan” is profoundly written. My only suggestion would be to add one or two more sentences regarding her appeal to our generation or towards the LGBTQ+ community. I think that Chappell is not afraid of the opinions of others nor how anyone else views her. I think this is a massive part of her popularity and could be talked about more within the article.

This is a well-written article that conveys Chappell Roan’s rise to fame. Castillo does a marvelous job explaining Roan’s path and why her music is so important to a wide variety of listeners. She touches on the fact that Roan’s music is a hit, but her presence as an artist is valuable to other aspiring LGBTQ+ artists as well. She mentions that Roan’s outfits and style take inspiration from drag queens, specifically the well-known “RuPaul’s Drag Race”. Castillo sings praise to the growing artist for helping listeners feel seen for who they are and who they can be.
Additionally, Castillo highlights the fact that Roan’s road to the big leagues wasn’t the “instafame” that some actors and musicians go through. Castillo beautifully summarizes the effort that Roan put in to get to where she is today. She has some failures in her journey but also wins, including her prosperous relationship with SONY and her connection to Olivia Rodrigo. Roan demonstrates the “10 years to fame,” as Castillo calls it.
This would have been the perfect time to mention how Roan isn’t content with how celebrities are treated in this day and age. Roan has had several incidents where she has had to stand up for herself against hassling paparazzi, rude fans, and nagging photographers. She retaliated with words against those who harassed her, saying that she would not allow herself to be treated as anything other than a person, which would be an amazing addition to the article to spotlight how Roan is changing the way celebrities are treated. In the end, Castillo does a fantastic job unraveling the road that Roan takes to fame through her music and representation.

Castillo did an excellent job covering Chappell Roan’s rise to fame. The article begins with providing some context into who Chappell Roan is as a person. Then, it describes her journey as an artist from when she began posting covers of her singing on YouTube, to her signing with Atlantic records in 2015, and ultimately publishing with SONY in 2022. From there she quickly rose to fame with her hit single “Good Luck, Babe!” which Castillo describes compellingly. I appreciated a quote the article included from Zoe Valentini which encapsulates a student’s perspective as to why people enjoy Chappell Roans music.
I would have loved to hear a quote from Chappell Roan on her experience with her rapid rise to fame. Ultimately this article did a great job covering Chappell Roans career and held my attention from the first paragraph.
