Millikan Girls Varsity Soccer has an incredibly strong senior foundation with three of the fourteen seniors on this team already being committed to universities where they will continue their soccer careers.
As the start of the girl’s soccer season inches closer, pressure rises and the work increases. Seniors are preparing for their last high school season, while newer members begin their journey as a member of the team.
The three talented committed athletes are Audrey Stewart, Alissey Fang, and Emily Marino. Stewart is in PEACE and has committed to the University of California Riverside. Fang is in QUEST and has committed to the University of California Irvine. Marino is in PEACE and has committed to Clarke University.
Varsity Coach Tino Nunez is beyond proud of all the girls for all the work and passion they have invested time and time again. They have proved their love for the sport with each season.
“These players have made it this far due to the commitment and discipline they have given to the sport,” said Nunez. “They are passionate about the sport and strive to be better every day. They have also been great teammates and support each other’s success.”
One of the players, varsity captain, Audrey Stewart, will be at UCR this upcoming fall as a Biology Major. Her message to other athletes is, “If you want to succeed you shouldn’t give up. Even when things feel bleak, your dedication will pay off and you’ll come out stronger.”
Senior Emily Marino will attend Clark University with a major in Biochemistry and pre-law. “It’s hard being a student-athlete, many people don’t realize the toll it takes both on your mental and physical health. You have to learn to put yourself first and take control of yourself,” says Marino.
Alissey Fang, a QUEST senior, will be at UCI studying Biological Sciences and pre-med. “My advice would be to put the work in when no one is watching, trust the process, and be patient because everyone’s path is different,” said Fang.
“No matter how hard things get, they always get better. I’m proud of each and every one of [the girls], it’s been a privilege coaching each and every one of them. I wish them the best of luck!” said Nunez.
The eleven seniors remaining have received offers, but still are in the process of making the best decision for them. Regardless of what this season may bring, these girls should be proud of everything they have accomplished. These girls have proven that hard work pays off and that they are strong individuals. Their next game is on Thursday, Dec. 14th, 2023 so please come out and support the Lady Rams!

This is an excellently written article that highlights the success and advice given by seniors on the Millikan Girls Soccer Team. Specifically, the three seniors, Emily Marino, Audrey Stewart, and Allisey Fang are already committed to select Universities.
I thought it was interesting that Quezada gathered advice from these three women regarding their experiences as student-athletes, and how to be successful at something which “‘…many people don’t realize the toll it takes both on your mental and physical health’” [Quezada]. Additionally, it was nice to read the praise from Coach Tino, also gathered by Quezada, and to read how Tino is proud of the Lady Rams and their hard work, passion, and supportive attitudes towards each other.
I found the information gathered was rightfully prideful, as the girls’ soccer team has had a great run thus far with amazing seniors leading the way. This was overall an engaging and insightful article to read.

On December 7, 2023, Tere Quezada wrote an article titled “Girls in The Big Leagues,” which expands on the idea and topic of Millikan women’s soccer varsity and their seniors for this year. For the commitments to big schools such as UC Riverside, UC Irvine, and Clarke University. However, these are only highlighting a few seniors, and I would suggest trying to expand on the fact that some are not going to pursue soccer at the collegiate level and instead are going to take the academic route. Getting their perspectives on going to the collegiate level in soccer, the process, and their academic successes. Regarding the statement made by Coach Tino Nunez, I believed it was a great way to highlight the four years he has had with these girls and how their graduating helps show the passion for the sport on and off the field, along with those carrying it on to college. However, getting the perspectives from the other coaches, such as Coach Gabe, Coach Jesse, or Coach Cruz, would help bring some depth to Tino’s outlook on this year’s season. I know firsthand how hard they are to come by and the importance of being the head coach of varsity soccer. In the final paragraphs, I enjoyed the quotes and the advice given by those who are graduating and pursuing something they believe in and are excited to go on and study. This gave a nice touch to their almost senior quote and message to the soccer team and those around them.

This article really stood out to me because I am also a student athlete, and I loved how much I could connect to the three seniors interviewed.

Dear Corydon Editor,
On December 7, 2023, Tere Quezadas wrote an article titled “Girls in The Big Leagues”.
This article begins with the three seniors on the 2023-24 girls varsity soccer team who are committed to continue their student-athlete journeys in college. It is a big honor to be playing in college and I admire the editor for creating an article solely focused on this team’s achievements already from this season this year. I also applaud the way she input statements and advice from the three girls, as well as Coach Tino. The words from the coach give the readers input on what he expects from the girls including the desire in developing them to love and play the sport in the future. Also, adding these in gives the readers a feel of where the players and the coach stand for this year’s program and expectations that are to be met in order to get to the college level and to focus on the talent to dominate this year’s season. 2
Sincerely,
Melia Kukahiko

On December 7, 2023, Tere Quezada wrote an article titled “Girls in The Big Leagues”. Tere starts off the article by informing the students of Millikan High School about the strong and successful girls that are on our girls varsity soccer team. She also mentions the large number of seniors that make up the team and highlights three out of the fourteen girls that have had a major impact on the success of the team. The three girls include Emily Marino, Alissey Fang, and Audrey Stewart. All of these seniors have committed to colleges where they will continue to play the sport they love and strive in their academics as well. In the interviews with the three seniors, Tere asks them for a piece of advice that could benefit other student athletes that are striving for being successful as an athlete and as a student. The girls also talk a little about themselves which allows the reader to get to know them a little more. By focusing on the girls she is able to emphasize that and show how much these girls have accomplished. Overall, this article does a great job at highlighting the team itself along with the girls that make it successful.

Dear Corydon Editor,
On December 7, 2023, Tere Quezada wrote an article titled, “Girls in The Big Leagues” to recognize the seniors on our Millikan Girls Varsity Soccer team and how their determination and commitment as student-athletes has led them to achieve great things. This article highlights three of fourteen seniors who have committed to Universities to further their academic/soccer careers. I praise the author for recognizing these hard working seniors and including some words of wisdom they have for those reading this article. I was surprised to know that the remaining eleven seniors also have offers. This shows me that the girls are extremely talented and committed to their sport. One thing I’d suggest is to get the perspectives of other seniors to also recognize their hard work and commitment towards this team. This article is very well written and I hope for nothing but the best for the seniors on the varsity soccer team.
Sincerely,

On December 7, 2023, Tere Quezada wrote an article titled “Girls in the Big Leagues”. This article does an excellent job of informing the rest of the students on campus of how successful girls in sports are becoming and how they are achieving dreams of playing their sport in college. This article is very important to share because it can also help to inspire other girls on campus or anyone to continue their dreams or to even join other extracurricular activities on campus. This inspiration added in the article like the motivational quotes included are an excellent way of informing students what a great school Millikan is to help its students be able to succeed later on in life and how some of its students are already there.
Although the article did include many different quotes from the girls and their coach, I think it would also be important to include the other girls on the soccer team’s opinion. This could help everyone know what goals they have as well and how they’re doing in achieving those goals after high school. Parents of the girls could also be included to spread how proud they must be of their daughters achieving such big dreams. Overall, this article has a very good purpose and can help many others on campus do the same.

Dear Corydon Editor,
On December 7, 2023, Tere Quezada wrote an article titled “Girls in The Big Leagues”. This article was focused on the Millikan Girls Varsity Soccer team and their big accomplishments. Quezada focuses on three out of fourteen seniors on the team who have accomplished their verbal commitment to three different universities to continue their soccer career. This soccer team is a D1 team who has extremely hard working athletes and huge support for one another. The coach is Tino Nunez who is quoted as being extremely proud of all the work the girls have put in and the passion they share for their sport. Tere Quezada did a great job getting quotes from all 3 members and the Varsity Coach herself for how they were capable of all their achievements.
The use of quotes from the players helped to give the audience an extra insight to who the players are all the strive it takes. I feel that the coaches quotes could have fit better after the seniors quotes to conclude an outside view of how the team works together. It was very interesting to hear more about these girls’ careers and their advice as a student-athlete. It was a great article and very informative of very accomplished students from this school.

On December 21, 2023, Tere Quezadas wrote an article titled “Girls in The Big Leagues”. This is a well-written, easily comprehensible, empowering and very insightful article. From the start this article caught my eye with the captivating title. I love how you choose to focus on women, I feel as they don’t get too much praise and especially in sports. The addition of the girl’s own words are empowering to other women out there. It is such a great way to encourage and empower others. Tere gives a great source of insight on the background of these girls’ pathways and their own words of encouragement. Such as, “‘If you want to succeed you shouldn’t give up. Even when things feel bleak, your dedication will pay off and you’ll come out stronger.’” It is always such a great thing when people get to share how they feel with others and give you a sense of how they got to where they are.
Overall, this article does a great job bringing and informing the student population on the great accomplishments of some of Millikan’s girls seniors. It is wonderful to see how great others are doing. Along with that, the addition of the next soccer game is a wonderful piece to get the readers to attend. I know that I now want to go and attend one of their games.
