The new Student Athletes Club was founded just this year to help athletes who have a job or need help to balance their schoolwork by going over what real athletes do to keep up with their performances.
One of the Co-Presidents, Fletcher Rosenberg, a junior in QUEST, says, “we wanted a club that got the mental side of it [balancing sports and school] acknowledged, [and it’s for everyone] not just for people who do sports, but people who are balancing sports and school, or school and a job, too.”
He explains that it’s for students who need help balancing a double life, such as him who competes in rowing and has a job. The club focuses on helping others manage their time for everything while also being a place for students to connect with their peers who may be in the same position.
The other Co-President, Mckenna Rosenberg, is a freshman in QUEST, plays on Millikan’s water polo and swim team. “The Student Athlete Club came up as an idea to introduce a way to balance school and sports with other kids at Millikan because if we [Fletcher and I] both experience the same types of struggles and issues, then a lot of other kids at school might experience it,” Rosenberg says.
During club meetings they’re contacting and getting tips from real professionals through emails. One of them being Adam Krikorian, the USA Women’s Olympic water polo coach, as well as Shana Welch, the Long Beach State Women’s water polo coach. Another one being George Lombard, a former baseball player for multiple teams and now a professional coach for the Detroit Tigers.
If you’re interested in the Student Athletes Club, you can find their Instagram and they meet the second Friday of every month, in room 832.
